IC Techniques Syllabus PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY STUDY CENTER OF NORTH CAROLINA CURRICULUM FOR Fall 2005 INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOANALYTIC PRINCIPLES Technique Course Coordinator: William S. Meyer, LCSW, BCD, 919-681-6840 Dodson Conference Room, Fourth Floor White Zone, Duke University Medical Center, South Technique Course Objectives: The focus of this course will be on what actually transpires in a therapeutic setting when a clinician is psychoanalytically informed. While this course is called a course on technique and is distinguished from Dr. Kudler's course on theory, the distinction between the two is more semantic than substantive. One cannot, in fact, talk about technique without drawing heavily on theory, and, likewise, theory which is unconnected to real people in live situations cannot be meaningful. Unlike Dr. Kudler's theory course, which will follow several texts chronologically, chapter by chapter, the readings for this course will be drawn from a wide variety of sources. We will cover major psychoanalytic ideas as expressed by noteworthy psychoanalytic authors for the purpose of providing a solid introduction to core concepts in psychoanalytic thinking and practice. 9-12-05 - The Timelessness of the Unconscious No reading 9-19-05 - Double Session Please read: Psychoanalysis : The Impossible Profession by Janet Malcolm (1982) Freud and Ferenczi: The Father and Mother of Psychoanalysis Please read: Ferenczi, S., (1933).
